A California Assembly committee advanced SB 1050 to the Judiciary Committee on a 9-0 vote Tuesday after testimony focused on disclosure requirements for AI-generated voices or likenesses in video and audio commercials.

During the hearing before the Assembly Arts, Entertainment, Sports and Tourism Committee, one witness said consumers have a right to know when an ad uses a synthetic performer and argued that undisclosed AI-generated voices or likenesses can mislead viewers. Melissa Patak, testifying for the Motion Picture Association, said the group appreciates ongoing conversations with the author and sponsor and suggested the bill should be narrowed.

The committee clerk later announced that SB 1050 was out 9-0 to Judiciary. The bill’s next step was not detailed in the hearing record.

The same hearing also included other measures on infrastructure finance, festival tax incentives and cultural district preservation, but SB 1050 was the bill that drew the clearest unresolved policy debate over synthetic media in advertising.
