The Ferndale City Council is scheduled to hold its annual public hearing Oct. 21 on unmet public transportation needs as part of the Humboldt County Association of Governments’ assessment process.
According to the city council packet, city staff recommends that the council adopt Finding No. 2: “There are no unmet transit needs which are reasonable to meet.” The packet says the council’s finding and any public comments would be forwarded to HCAOG for inclusion in its FY 2027–28 Unmet Transit Needs assessment.
The finding is part of a process required before Local Transportation Fund money can be allocated for non-transit purposes. The packet says Ferndale has historically used its LTF allocation for eligible street and road maintenance and improvements, and that continuing Finding No. 2 would allow the city to keep pursuing that use, subject to HCAOG’s regional findings and other requirements.
The packet also says Ferndale does not operate a municipal public transportation system. The Ferndale Senior Resource Center provides transportation assistance to seniors and people with disabilities, while HCAOG evaluates proposed transit needs using factors including operational feasibility, anticipated ridership and financial sustainability.
A council vote, public comments and the final hearing finding were not included in the agenda packet. The document also does not state the amount of Ferndale’s Local Transportation Fund allocation.
