Eureka’s July 21 City Council agenda bundles several public-safety spending items into the consent calendar, including a $157,060 California Highway Patrol Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program award for the Eureka Police Department.
The same agenda also asks council to approve the sole-source purchase of 52 replacement TASERs from Axon for $292,283.31, along with a five-year maintenance plan that would cost $58,578.67 a year, according to the meeting packet. The agenda says the purchase would be funded through the Special Law Enforcement Spending Fund.
The council packet does not explain in the agenda text why the department needs to replace the TASERs or how the city determined the purchase should be sole-source beyond the attachment titles listed with the item. It also does not show final council action; the items appear on the agenda as recommendations for the July 21 meeting.
The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. closed session and 6 p.m. regular session at Council Chamber, 531 K Street in Eureka.
