The Humboldt County Board of Education on May 13 approved intent to apply for an Innovative Approaches to Literacy grant that would seek $650,000 a year for five years, according to board minutes.

At the same meeting, the board also adopted a resolution to enter into a contract with California State Parks for the State Park Partner Schools project. In the minutes, Rosie Slentz, the district’s director of learning support services, said the agreement is part of a statewide effort to encourage schools to visit state parks.

The board also approved a series of governance updates, including bylaws on remuneration and benefits, meetings and notices, remote meetings and attendance, agenda and meeting materials, and meeting conduct. The minutes show the board waived a second reading for bylaw 9320.1 and adopted it the same night.

In discussing the literacy grant, Slentz said the goal is to get books into the hands of students in low-income areas. The minutes do not say which schools would benefit, whether the application had been discussed earlier, or how competitive the grant might be.

The same meeting included a reception honoring trustee Robert Siekmann for 50 years of service, a proclamation recognizing that milestone, and other routine board business. Superintendent Michael Davies-Hughes also noted California Day of the Teacher and Classified School Employee Week, and said Perrin Turney of Kneeland was selected as one of nine state classified school employee awardees in transportation services.

The agenda and minutes were posted by the Humboldt County Office of Education.
