Yuba City councilmembers unanimously approved two police traffic-enforcement grants Tuesday night that together total $359,666.80.
Police Sgt. David Krause presented both items. The council accepted a $90,000 Office of Traffic Safety Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant for DUI checkpoints, saturation patrols, distracted-driving enforcement, motorcycle safety and training, along with supplemental appropriations. It then approved a $269,666.80 Cannabis Tax Fund grant from the California Highway Patrol for additional checkpoints, patrols, training, equipment and a traffic-unit vehicle, also with supplemental appropriations.
The agenda packet identifies separate resolutions authorizing the chief of police to accept each grant. The packet also shows the council assigned the STEP money to overtime, travel and training, and direct costs, while the cannabis-tax grant includes funding for overtime, tools and supplies, travel and training, and equipment.
During discussion, council members raised concerns about bicycle and e-bike safety and whether additional enforcement or ordinance changes may be needed, according to the meeting summary.
