Arcata council members used an Aug. 19 information item on data centers to openly discuss whether the city should adopt temporary controls while staff studies zoning and land-use standards.
Building Official Joe Bishop’s presentation described the difference between co-location facilities and larger AI or hyperscale data centers and said Arcata’s local facility is tied to submarine cable landings. He also told the council that a temporary moratorium could be imposed under state law for 45 days while the city reviews possible code changes.
The discussion did not produce a final policy decision, but it marked a public step toward possible interim regulation of data-center development in Arcata.
The meeting materials and recorded discussion also tied the subject to broader questions about power demand, land use and how the city should prepare for future projects of this kind.
