Arcata City Council unanimously adopted a resolution on March 18 calling for an immediate end to the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran after first moving the item to the top of new business to accommodate the number of people who wanted to speak.
According to the meeting summary and transcript materials, the council’s agenda change brought the Iran resolution forward before public comment on other new-business items. The resolution was then discussed after extensive testimony for and against it, with residents and other commenters raising arguments about war powers, international law, and the city’s role in taking a public position on the conflict.
The council ultimately approved the measure unanimously. The retrieved materials identify the resolution as Resolution No. 256-50, though one source also contains a numbering variant.
The council meeting was otherwise marked by a series of unrelated actions, including closed-session settlement reports, ceremonial proclamations for Sunshine Week and Two Spirit Celebration and Appreciation Day, coastal zoning and general-plan actions, a mid-year budget revision, and committee appointments. But the Iran resolution drew the most sustained public attention.
Public commenters spoke both in support of and in opposition to the resolution, and the meeting summary says the hearing included extensive testimony on each side before the vote.
