Humboldt County supervisors used their June 15 budget hearing to add two new instructions to the county’s FY 2026-27 budget process.
According to the Board of Supervisors minutes, the board told staff to develop budget workshops with mandatory department-head attendance focused on the county’s FY 2027-28 General Fund structural deficit. Supervisors also directed staff to work with the Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division to identify funding for spay and neuter services.
Supervisor Steve Madrone cast the lone no vote on the motion. The minutes show the board moved the FY 2026-27 budget forward for adoption at a June 18 special meeting while adding the two directives.
The budget hearing also covered the county’s broader fiscal outlook, including the structural deficit staff said is still a central concern as supervisors prepare for next year’s budget cycle. But the immediate action was narrower: instead of waiting for the adoption meeting to address those pressures, the board asked staff to begin planning workshops now and to find a possible funding path for animal-control services.
